Today we are diving into the world of Asperger’s with none other than Professor Tony Attwood. We delve into how our understanding of autism has changed over the years, what autism actually is, how you can celebrate Asperger’s, managing your child’s ‘challenging behaviour’, supporting your child through anxiety and depression ….and SO MUCH MORE! Tony has worked with thousands of individuals of all ages with Asperger’s syndrome or an Autism Spectrum Disorder and today he is sharing his wisdom and insight with us.

5 Rapid Fire Questions:

What is one habit parents can implement today?
Be calm because if you get upset it’s going to make the situation worse. Those with autism have a sixth sense of negativity. You on your scale of a zero – ten are at a two he’s going to respond as though you’re at an eight or a nine. So whenever you can even when upset hide it and be calm.

What do people never ask you that you wish they did?
Nothing because they have asked everything.

What book would you recommend all parents read?
Of course my own book! Go to JKP.com it is the primary source of literature in this area from early diagnosis to couples and relationships.

What is your top unfinished bucket list items?
To return to Hertfordshire in England where my wife and I went in 1978 before children, and it was the creation of children there. It’s to go back in time to then to explore it together.

If you could only offer one piece of advice to parents, what would it be?
Love and accept your child. Accept who they are and that is important. Express your love for that person because what is important is to feel accepted in life.
