Gut health and autism – how do they relate? Autism is a brain condition, right? If you are curious about how the health of your child’s gut can impact the core characteristics of autism – then you have to tune in to today’s informative and empowering chat with the wonderful Kirsty Wirth.
Kirsty is the founder of Kultured Wellness – a company which makes beautiful cultures and is on a mission to spread the message about gut health far and wide. Her fascination with the gut began when her son was diagnosed with autism. Kirsty took the road less travelled when she began exploring ways of addressing the root cause for her son’s behaviours and symptoms through nutrition and lifestyle change. In this episode, Kirsty talks about her personal journey, detecting gut issues, probiotics, leaky gut and healing the gut for overall health and vitality.
5 Rapid-Fire questions
1. What is one habit parents can implement today?
I’d love you to make bone broth every single day and start that with your children. Very simple start.
2. What do people never ask you that you wish they did?
I wish they asked “how long is the journey?” and “how much do I have to commit?”. Because a lot of people think its a quick fix and a lot of people think it’s easy and I’d love to talk to people more about it. It is a commitment. And you do have to change your life and make awesome new friends. You get a new tribe and a new community around you and that takes a bit of time, but it’s going to be fine.
3. What book would you recommend all parents read?
Gut: The Inside Story Of Our Body’s Most Under-Rated Organ by Giulia Enders.
Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.
4. What is your top unfinished bucket list items?
What I’d love to do is provide a space where families can bring their kids, and when they go through those hairy 3-5 days that we were talking about – crossing over from eating old foods to new foods – I would love parents to be able to drop their kids off, go off and have a cuppa and someone else sorts it out. Because it’s really full on and families shouldn’t have to go through that, and I would love to provide a space where that happens in a safe place for everyone.
5. If you could only offer one piece of advice to parents, what would it be?
Test test test test! Get the test! Don’t expect that there’s not more underlying root cause problems going on. So be inquisitive. Be curious. Find the person that will help you find those tests and get those tests and empower yourself to drive this. And be the best advocate for your child so they can feel well again. It’s not about changing their diagnosis. It’s not about stopping them from being the unique kids that they are, thats not what I’m talking about. Get them to be feeling well and achieving what they want to do. So that’s my biggest advice. Do not accept anything – just keep driving forward. And if that freaks you out – find someone who will be that advocate and drive for you.
