This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Angela Hanscom, a paediatric Occupational Therapist based in the US and founder of TimberNook – an award winning developmental nature based program. Angela is extremely passionate about reconnecting children with nature, her book Balanced and Barefoot highlights the importance of nature based play.
Angela tells of how she first started working in a traditional clinic environment, however as her waitlist grew coupled with the birth of her own children and realising children aren’t playing outside like they used to, TimberNook was born! Angela shares with listeners what this innovative approach looks like and the many benefits which children can reap from this. Angela also provides the parents at home with some strategies to connect their children with nature and utilise all their senses.
Finally she shares some exciting news – that TimberNook is coming to Australia!
5 Rapid-Fire Questions
1. What is one habit parents can implement today?
I would say, just step outdoors and try setting up an area with loose parts, like we just described, and see what they do. And also, to step back and just be present.
2. What do people never ask you that you wish they did?
I get asked everything!
3. What book would you recommend all parents read?
Free to Learn by Peter Gray
It’s all about what play really is and how play is a choice, it’s not necessarily directed by an adult.
4. What is one of your top 3 unfinished bucket list items?
Go to Italy!
5. If you could only offer one piece of advice to parents, what would it be?
Just slow down. To remember that childhood only comes once and to enjoy and cherish your children and that children are not perfect and to love them for who they are.
